We are up to our ears in snow and ice and hot cocoa is a must in weather like that! What do you do when you don’t have convenient store bought cocoa packets and you can’t leave your house due to weather? You make your own of course in minutes and decide that homemade hot cocoa is way better!
Since my kids were very little I have always loved to proclaim Winter as hot cocoa season. You will find us often coming in and sharing cups of cocoa together or cozying up on a Winter night, eating popcorn, sipping cocoa and watching a movie together.
Hot cocoa has become something much more than a beverage to us…it has become something linked to quality time and memory making.

When I made this Simple Homemade Hot Cocoa recipe the kids approved! All you need is some milk, sugar or sweeter and baking cocoa and a little salt.
Homemade Hot Cocoa
A delicious and simple recipe for a nostalgic beverage the whole family will enjoy.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup sugar (You may substitute with a calorie free sugar substitute to reduce each serving by 54 kcalories.)
- 1/4 cup baking cocoa
- 1 dash salt
- 1/3 cup hot water
- 4 cups 2% milk (You may substitute with a low calories almond milk to reduce each serving by 90 kcalories.)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla *optional
- 1/8 tsp cinnamon *optional
Instructions

Add sugar, cocoa and water to pan over low to medium heat and stir mixture to create a chocolate sauce.

Add milk, salt, vanilla and cinnamon to mixture and bring to a low simmer for about 5 minutes until mixed and nice and warm.
